A teenager from Dundalk was recently killed in an industrial accident at a metal processing plant in Sparrows Point, Maryland.

The June 15 accident reportedly happened when the 19-year-old worker was pulled into a steel rolling machine at Maryland Metals Processing. According to the Baltimore County Police Department, he had been working on a coil polish machine when he became entangled in a steel coil. He was unable to extract himself before being pulled into the machine and crushed.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after first responders arrived. He had only been working at the facility for about a month, officials said.

Workplace accidents are always investigated

Law enforcement officials ruled out foul play, but officials from Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) were preparing to conduct an investigation into the incident, as is customary with any workplace accident that results in serious injury or death.

In these investigations, experts look to determine if the accident occurred because of any negligence on the part of the company and its management. If, for example, MOSH investigators were to find that the company did not provide workers with the proper training or safety equipment, the company could be considered liable for the worker’s death. This liability could allow the victim’s family to take legal action against the company.
