Four people were killed in a Hyattsville, Maryland accident Sunday, November 8 after a pickup truck reportedly ran into a van transporting more than a dozen people.

The deceased victims included two adults and a child in the van, along with the driver of the pickup truck. Eight more adults and six children suffered injuries — and many of these individuals continue to receive medical care.

An ongoing investigation

Before the collision occurred, the truck had rear-ended another vehicle just a few hundred feet down Chillum Road from where the fatal accident happened. Authorities were unable to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, as the driver’s remains were so badly burned in the fire that ultimately consumed the vehicle.

Meanwhile, four of the injured adults and all six children were listed as being in critical condition when they were admitted to the hospital, and authorities were concerned the number of deaths could rise.

A video of the crash scene taken by a witness made the rounds on Twitter after being shared by a local reporter, with the burning wreckage producing huge flames and clouds of smoke. Without a toxicology report, it could be difficult to say exactly what caused the accident, but police believe the pickup driver was likely at fault.
