The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m., just east of the Montezuma-La Plata county line. According to police, a male driver in an SUV was traveling west toward Mancos when he hydroplaned into the eastbound lane, crashing into an SUV that was carrying a family of four. The 52-year-old father and a 16-year-old son in the SUV were both killed in the collision. The mother and a 14-year-old son were transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. They were reportedly recovering well in the aftermath of the crash. The 36-year-old driver of the first SUV, a Nissan Armada, was heading west when a sudden downpour of rain made for poor visibility. He was alert and talking to responders at the scene, and he only had mild injuries. Criminal charges were pending a completed investigation, and police did not comment as to whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
